It took BAD SELLIN’ RECORD about two years and some line-up changes to produce their second album “Cock Rocks” but it’s worth the wait. The first CD earned the band the nickname “Austria’s Guns’n’Roses”, based not only on Alex Lipscher’s unique voice but on the performance of the whole group. The second CD amply proves them worthy of the appellation!

“Who R. U.”, the first track, right away shows off all the trademarks of BAD SELLIN’ RECORD: a fast-paced rhythm section, strong vocals and excellent guitars that almost seem to sing a duet in the middle part. “Better era”, my personal favourite, brings more of the same, in the best sense of the word, and strongly underlines the GUNS’N’ROSES connection with a powerful vocal-and-rhythm-arrangement in the intro. If Axl Rose would still be able to sing like this… If G’N’R would still be able to write songs like this one… but as it is now, BAD SELLIN’ RECORD are definitely not to small to step into such big shoes!
“Undress”, the so-called “strip song”, is a favourite with every live audience. On stage the intro is spoken by drummer Stephan Stranz. Up-tempo and with an unmistakeable text – according to Alex inspired by an ex-girlfriend – this song works best when the audience has reached a certain level of alcoholic abandon…and the results can be really surprising!

Although BAD SELLIN’ RECORD are best known and loved for their fast Rock songs, they have composed a handful of wonderful middle- and low-tempo tracks. First among these is “Thanx”, an exquisitely emotional ballad with a touch of Country & Western style. “Thinkin’ B. U.” is another slow, nice’n’easy number, perfectly fitted for hanging around with friends in a chill-out lounge. “Hummin’Motor” is a groovy song that manages a fine balance between an up-to-date finish and roots from Woodstock times.

A special spotlight has to be thrown on the last three tracks of the album:
“Au Contraire”, the longest song by far at almost seven minutes, is technically the most demanding piece on the whole CD. A deceptively easy rhythm lays a strong foundation for the floating and weaving patterns of the two guitars – best to be heard in the middle part, so take a closer look, Slash – and the strong vocals. It’s not a sing-along-song but it sure captures the audience.
This is followed by the shortest track, “S.S.S.C.”, which barely lasts two minutes. It’s a sweetly old-fashioned sounding ballad with a slightly ironic text. If you want to know the meaning of the title, listen closely to the chorus!
The last number is “No panic – reloaded”, a re-working of the title track of the first album which has become the unofficial band hymn. The guys added some nice sound effects with the guitars but unfortunately the song lost some of its power and drive in the process.

Summarily, I can say BAD SELLIN’ RECORD have released a piece of Hard Rock art that has all the makings of a future classic. But I want to add a caveat: don’t you ever try again to re-work one of your old songs. You can’t make them any better!
